Access to healthy and affordable food has been a challenge for Nunavummiut for many years.
In 2010-2011, the Nunavut Roundtable for Poverty Reduction held public gatherings in each of Nunavut’s 25 communities to help develop a territorial poverty reduction plan.
The Makimaniq Plan: A Shared Approach to Poverty Reduction included a commitment to create a Nunavut Food Security Strategy and develop a territorial action plan on food security. This commitment was maintained in Makimaniq Plan 2.
The Nunavut Food Security Coalition and the Nunavut Food Security Strategy are the result of this commitment.
